Cacapon Institute and Williamsport Elementary Partner to Build Butterfly Garden
On April 25th, 2012 the Cacapon Institute helped 20 WES students plant a high visibility butterfly garden in the front of the school. The Green School Club wanted to install a butterfly garden to contribute to biodiversity by attracting beneficial insects and birds. The native plants are an important factor in promoting biodiversity. Native plants provide food and shelter for birds, butterflies and other desirable wildlife. Many help to enrich the soil. Their root systems help rainfall percolate into the soil, reducing erosion and runoff. This improves water quality.

As of May 2008 Williamsport Elementary Magnet School for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics has been awarded "Green School" status from the state of Maryland. Kudos to our students' hard work and efforts that that led to this initiative becoming a reality! To learn more about the process WES teachers and students worked through to gain this status, please visit the website of The Maryland Association for Environmental and Outdoor Education.
WES continues to maintain Green School status through a variety of initiatives including Green Patrol, Green Week and Earth Week, and Green School Club. Our students record wildlife sightings, provide shelter and food for birds native to Maryland, and promotes conservation efforts within our school and community.
