Williamsport Elementary Magnet Program
WCPS provides students and families a variety of educational options to address the diverse interests, talents, and aptitudes of advanced level learners. The Annotated Code of Maryland (Section 8-201) defines an advanced learner, or gifted and talented student, as one who has outstanding talent and performs, or shows the potential for performing, at remarkably high levels of accomplishment when compared with other students of a similar age, experience, or environment. Accomplishment or potential may be demonstrated in intellectual, creative, or artistic areas. Advanced learners may also demonstrate unusual leadership capacity or excel in specific academic fields.
The WES Magnet Program for science, technology, engineering, and math offers highly challenging and accelerated learning experiences for students in grades 2-5 who demonstrate exceptional academic potential, strong motivation and work ethic, creativity, and leadership ability. Students in the magnet class at each grade level remain with their magnet teacher for learning core content in math, science, language arts, and social studies. Magnet students blend with their grade-level peers for encore classes in media, physical education, art, and music.
WCPS Magnet Programs are open to all students residing in Washington County. There is no cost to participate; however, parents/guardians may need to provide transportation if living outside the magnet school attendance area. Selection is based upon a comprehensive review of multiple sources of information, including a student interview, academic performance, teacher observation, parent questionnaire, standardized and criterion-referenced assessments.
